Rob Lowe Fever

If we are FB friends, you know I am in the midst of a Rob Lowe revival. A few weeks ago, I posted an excerpt from his newest book, Love Life, in which he talks about sending his oldest son off to college. It was poignant and well written and I totally cried. This brought forth a Rob Lowe reawakening in me. I have loved this guy for about 20 years. I mean, I do not believe there is a male specimen more gorgeous, but I have also come to love him as an actor. Plus he’s aged like nobody’s business. In college, I remember Farrah and I in our room at Pi Phi’s watching About Last Night many, many times. Sure, I liked St. Elmo’s Fire, but About Last Night is far and away the best Rob Lowe movie, and one of the my fave all time movies. I just watched again last night, still love (currently streaming on Netflix).

About Last Night3  About Last Night4

If you know me, you know that when I get into something, I’m all in. Felicity was last year. 2 very enjoyable weeks reacquainting myself with my friends at UNY and rekindling my love of Ben. Parenthood was this year. Can Julia and Joel just get back together already?! Right now, clearly, it’s Rob Lowe on the brain. This week, I read (devoured) his first memoir, Stories I Only Tell My Friends in about 3 days (which has also driven me to finally watching The West Wing). Easy read, thoroughly enjoyable. You can’t not like this guy after you read his book. He is self deprecating, funny, not an asshole, a great husband and father, an all around fantastic person, who just happens to have some of the best stories about his past.

For example, he went to high school in Malibu with Emilio Estevez, Charlie Sheen, Robert Downey Jr. and Sean Penn. That’s pretty crazy. His first movie was The Outsiders, where he worked with Francis Ford Coppola, Tom Cruise, Emilio Estevez, Patrick Swayze at age 19 and shot on location in Louisiana for a few months. This was one of my favorite stories in the book. Fascinating business!

He dated so many famous ladies too (Melissa Gilbert, Demi Moore, Princess Stephanie of Monaco). He got into his trouble with the underage girls in the video scandal and ended up in rehab, but now he’s been sober for 25 years, married to his wife for 23 years and has 2 sons whom he adores and is a very active and involved dad. He is most definitely not the typical Hollywood actor. He has ended up have a pretty decent acting career, while being a great family man. Rob Lowe is a total stud. In every way.

I’m now about halfway through his second book, also loving it. He has a refreshing attitude, is open and honest about his career and his past, and has lead a life that I, for one, can’t seem to read enough about. If you’re looking for a new book, pick up one of his. And please, do yourself a favor and check out About Last Night if you missed it 20 years ago.

One more pic of Rob, just for good measure. Seriously, could he be more handsome?

Perfect Summer Salad – Kale & BBQ Chicken

Last night I had my friends Arlene and Melissa over for our first MIHS 20 Year Reunion planning meeting. Stepping up to plan the reunion has been the best decision, I am loving these strolls down memory lane. We have been laughing so hard telling old stories, thinking about people we haven’t thought about in 20 years, it has been awesome. And we haven’t even gotten had the actual reunion yet!

The Seattle weather has been ridiculously gorgeous this past week, very atypical for May. I had wanted to make a dinner salad for the ladies and how appropriate that I brought out this blast from the past. I haven’t made this BBQ chicken salad in about 10 years, I tweaked it a little and boom, I have my new summer salad obsession (besides Jamie Oliver’s, which is more of a side salad, so I feel like I can equally obsessed with both).

Kale & BBQ Chicken Salad with Shallot Vinaigrette (courtesy of me)

  • 2 bunches lacinato kale, thinly sliced (I use the ribs, when it’s sliced thin like this, I don’t mind them at all)
  • 2 ears corn, cooked and kernels cut off (you could also use a can of corn, but it’s summer and corn is so fresh!)
  • 1 largo avocado, diced
  • 1/2 cucumber, sliced and quartered
  • 1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved
  • 4 green onions (white and green parts), sliced
  • 1 can black beans, rinsed and drained
  • 2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 1/4 C soy sauce
  • 1T garlic, minced
  • 2T olive oil
  • BBQ sauce

For the dressing

  • 2T shallots, finely minced
  • 1/4 C champagne vinegar
  • 3t Dijon mustard
  • 1/3 C olive oil
  • salt & pepper

  1. Preheat oven to 350°. Combine soy sauce, minced garlic and olive oil and a bowl and marinate chicken for at least 20 minutes. Cook chicken breasts for 20 – 30 minutes (until cooked through) in marinade and allow them to cool down. Dice it and toss in your favorite bbq sauce.
  2. While the chicken is marinating/cooking, cook your corn (boiling water for 7 minutes, allow to cool down), chop up all of the veggies (save the avocados til the end so they don’t brown) and make your dressing.
  3. Toss the salad with the dressing, add the chicken, toss again, then serve.

It’s healthy, it’s delish, perfect summer entrée salad. They loved it. Actually, it was Melissa’s first time eating kale. Whaaaaa??? No comprende. Now I’ve converted her over to kale, yay me!

Mascara Madness

If I was only allowed one cosmetic item, it would be mascara. If I have to leave the house and I’m only wearing mascara, I don’t feel terrible. Actually, I leave the house a few days a week without any makeup on at all, on days that I’m doing pilates and working from home. I kind of like that I still have the balls to do that, since I know it probably isn’t so pretty, but whatever. I digress. The topic at hand is mascara. I have tried many over the years. Like every gal out there, I am on the hunt to find the perfect product to make my lashes longer and more voluminous.

I was at Nordstrom yesterday in need of a new tube. I’ve been using Benefit’s ‘They’re Real‘ ($23) for the past year and love it, but I’m always up for trying something new. Back in the day, when I was working for Nordstrom and rocking my 33% discount, I got addicted to YSL’s ‘Faux Cils’ ($30). This mascara is amazing and was YSL’s #1 mascara until ‘Baby Doll’ ($30) came out. I had to give it a try.

This was when the salesperson alerted to a little event called Mascara Madness on May 24.

But any 2 mascaras, get the 3rd one free! Mix and match any brand Nordstrom carries!

I feel like you should buy me a present or at least give me one really nice compliment for telling you about this. Cosmetics never go on sale. Do the math. You are saving yourself 33%. Pretty sweet. You don’t even need to shop on the actual day, you can call and do it over the phone or go in at any time prior and they will ring it and ship it to you after the event. I love Nordstrom.

I ended up buying Baby Doll and used it today. (Sorry for the scary eye shots.I am wearing Baby Doll with no other eye makeup) I am really liking it. The brush is very easy to apply with, it goes on smoothly and I applied a few coats. Not sure if I like it as much as ‘They’re Real’ or even ‘Faux Cils’, but I will definitely be stocking up for Mascara Madness. Now I just need to decide which 3 to choose!

Mother’s Day for 2

Mother’s Day is a little different when you are waking up with your 4 year old whom you have to keep reminding it’s Mother’s Day. When I was putting Oliver to bed on Saturday night, “Oliver, tomorrow is Mother’s Day, so when you come wake me up in the morning, say Happy Mother’s Day Mama!” And Oliver’s response “It is Mother’s Day too much.” Really honey? I’m pretty sure every day is Oliver day, but ok. I think he said that because when I dropped him off at school on Friday, his teacher had Oliver give me my MD present, which was like, the best thing ever.

Oliver's MD Note

On the actual morning, I ended up doing pretty well. Oliver slept in an hour. He let me choose which Transformers movie we watched. And he got in the stroller so we could take a walk around our beautiful neighborhood. He was awesome and we had the best day. We finished it off with dinner to celebrate the other main mom in our lives, Mum (my mom).

Mum and Oliver do so many projects together, she loves to play with him and read him stories. They garden together. They are such pals and I am so lucky to have a mom who genuinely relishes her grandson. As a mom, she is also pretty amazing. She gives me so much love and support. We laugh. We talk about (mostly) everything. I don’t know what I would do without her. She is so devoted to us and we love her more than anything!

I loved how happy and content I was spending the day just me and my most special guy. I know at one point, I felt sad about how Mother’s Day had changed for me, but now, my little family of just Oliver and I is just perfect.

Hope all of you had a lovely day celebrating and being celebrated!

Oh, PS, we made the Jaime Oliver Everyday Green Chopped Salad for dinner last night. My mom said it might be the best salad she’s ever eaten. I can’t help you if you don’t listen to me.
