Ends of Friends

Lynne & Lauren – Pre Tolo – 1992

I caught up on the phone yesterday with Lauren, one of my best, oldest friends. We met in 5th grade, played basketball together, were neighbors in Queen Anne for a year in our 20’s, and although we don’t see each other or talk as much as we’d both like, this is a solid friendship. One that has lasted almost 30 years and I can genuinely say that I not only love her, but like her. When we catch up, we inevitably ask for updates about each other’s friends. Over the past 2 years, my friendship landscape has seen some major shifts as I eluded to in the “Thirty-Eight” post. She told me about this article she read recently on the Huffington Post “The 5 Types Of Friends Everyone Should Have“. I read it and it really resonated, you should totally read it as well. The gist of the article is that as we get older and have less time to devote to friendships, some just don’t make sense anymore and the process of “de-friending” is important. It’s “difficult to take a hard look at the relationships I’ve cultivated through the decades and realize, with a heavy heart, that they’re not all going to last.”

As I move forward in life, as I grow and change and have gone through serious transitions, some friendships have not weathered the storm and I have done some de-friending, on Facebook and in real life. My head understands this is the right thing, but it hurts my heart. Relationships that I would have been willing to bet my life would have sustained simply haven’t. The shitty thing is there is no definitive “why”. You can go through the list of transgressions on both sides, there’s usually some drama, but ultimately, the friendship ends because it doesn’t feel good anymore, you don’t fit with a person that used to be a great fit. The story comes down to people growing in different directions and as much as it hurts, I have to believe it is ok.

I grew up in Seattle, went to UW, and other than a 4 year stint in San Francisco, have lived in here my whole life. There are people in my life that have literally been there since I was born. When you think about it, it makes perfect sense that some of the friendships that were significant in my teens and 20’s are not the ones I gravitate towards today.

But the article wasn’t just about moving on from the friendships that don’t work, it focused on the really, really good kind of friends. The friends that fall into the category of “Friends Worth Keeping Forever”. On the list in the article about the 5 types, the 2 that stood out were friends who make the effort and friends who are authentic. I can say that the people I allow myself to be close to, vulnerable with, they make the effort and are authentic.

As I get older, life seems to only be getting more complicated, more difficult, dealing with divorce and death and job losses and house losses. When you take a look around you to see who’s by your side, the group may be smaller than it was a decade ago, but for me, it’s solid. I may not have a husband, but I am rich in friends!

To my nearest and dearest, you know who you are. Thank you for making the effort. Thank you for your authenticity. I love you and am so appreciative of you! And I apologize for the pics. Not really. We were so young!!!

Best Blow Job Ever

Come on, it’s not that kind of blog. We’re pretty PG around here, you should know that by now. I don’t even use the F word, which is pretty unbelievable since it is my favorite word. The great news is now I might get some traffic from someone searching for porn, so I got that going for me. Anyway…I had a conversation last night with my friends Tiffany and Damiana, they were asking if I had a good hair dryer to recommend. Duh, obviously. I actually posted on this during the early days, but this dryer is worth its own post. I’ve had it for about a year now and it I’m not lying, best blow job.

Sedu 4000i Hair Dryer

First off, Folica.com is where you should buy any hair tool. There is almost always a 20% off coupon, plus no shipping and no tax. The Sedu Revolution Pro Tourmaline Ionic 4000i is literally the best dryer I’ve owned. It is a little pricey at $174, but with the coupon, you get it for $139. I promise, it’s worth it. The Sedu Revolution Pro is “one of the first professional  hair dryers of its kind with super compact size and light weight design, it has 60% more power than a  conventional dryer. With the most effective tourmaline coated ionic generator, this dryer reduces frizz and static by 90% and cuts drying time in half.”

Both Tiff and D made the purchase and I know they’re gonna love! Once again, you’re welcome. What ever would you do without me?!

Easy Weeknight Dinner – Crunchy Parmesan Chicken Tenders

How do you guys feel about the end of support for Windows XP? Do you want to hear my thoughts on getting people to migrate to Windows 8? Oh, wait, you don’t care about that because it’s not interesting. At all. Well, actually it is to me, but that’s because I’m a geek. And it’s my job. Right now, that’s what’s taking up my head space. That and when will I be able to stop stressing about my new house/move?! I haven’t had a ton of time to cook, but decided I needed to make something last night and found this little beauty of a recipe. This dinner took 30 minutes from start to finish.

I am a huge fan of parmesan chicken strips, I’ve tried several recipes. This one was new to me, but super easy and delish, the difference was coating the chicken in buttermilk and letting it sit. I served with sautéed asparagus and roasted kale – I am trying to do 2 veggies instead of 1 veggie and 1 starch, at least sometimes. I made 2lbs of the chicken tenders, thinking Oliver would love it. He ate one bite. Now I have 1.5lbs of chicken to get through in 2 days. Anyone want to come for dinner? I’m serving leftovers! I have been thinking of creative ways to use and think it would make for a really good kale chicken Caesar salad. I think I’ll do that for dinner tomorrow.

Crunchy Parmesan Chicken Tenders

modified slightly from Giada De Laurentiis recipe

  • 4 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 cup  buttermilk
  • 1 1/2 pounds chicken tenders (about 18)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 1/4 cups freshly grated  Parmesan
  • 3/4 cup Panko

  1. Preheat the oven to 500 degrees F.
  2. Brush 1 tablespoon of oil over each of 2 heavy large lined baking sheets. Place the buttermilk in a large bowl. Add the chicken tenders and stir to coat. Let stand at least 15 minutes and up to 30 minutes.
  3. Stir the Parmesan and bread crumbs, S & P in a pie dish. Remove the chicken tenders from the buttermilk and dredge them in the bread crumb mixture to coat completely, pressing to adhere. Arrange the coated chicken tenders on the baking sheets, I used parchment paper to cover the sheets, spacing evenly. Drizzle the remaining 2 tablespoons of oil over the chicken tenders and bake until they are cooked through and golden brown, about 12 minutes.
  4. Transfer the chicken tenders to a platter and serve.

Out of the Closet

No, it’s not that kind of post. I’m as hetero as always! This post is literally about closets. I am a gal who has an appreciation for clothes and shoes. My new house has an enormous master closet. Yay! Getting this turned into something functional? Time to drop another $5k. Boo! Again, I know, rich people problems. But can you blame me for not wanting the wire closet that comes standard with the house?

I have been looking at several different options – the elfa system at The Container Store, Closets by Design, Tailored Living (I didn’t even bother to look at California Closets, way too expensive). The problem with elfa is you have to measure yourself and then figure it out in their store. No thanks. I got 2 bids, one from Closets by Design, and the winner was from Tailored Living, for Oliver’s closet and mine. No serious bells or whistles, it’s hanging, shelves and a few drawers. And I am choosing the (cheapest) white finish.  And it is still $5,000! It’s a good thing I’m rich. Update: I am not actually rich. Just want to make sure we’re clear on that. I am, however, rich on sarcasm.

Here are some pics of what my closet will look nothing like. #closetporn

Below are the renderings of our closets, simple and straightforward. Nothing fancy, but so exciting!!
